Youth Opportunities Unlimited (Y.O.U.) has received strong statewide support since its inception in Arkansas in 1988. All the states' workforce Investment Areas have sponsored participants in the program which enrolled from 150 to 300 students annually. In the past decade, more than 5,000 students have participated in Y.O.U. at seven university campuses throughout the state. Five campuses have served more than 400 students in Y.O.U. II.
2004 Y.O.U. PROGRAM
The dates for the Y.O.U. program are June 7 to July 22 . Students who meet the eligibility requirements listed below may apply by contacting their school counselors or local WIA offices.
Y.O.U.
14 or 15 years of age by the first day of camp and entering the 9th and 10th grades, and at-risk of dropping out of school, and eligible for WIA programs.
Y.O.U. II
15, 16, or 17 years of age, and entering the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades, and income eligible for WI A programs .
(No Y.O.U. II program is planned for 2004.)
2003 Y.O.U. PROGRAM
In 2003 Y.O.U. provided services to students on the campuses of University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Monticello, and Pine Bluff. Stanford-9 pre- and post-testing of Y.O.U. students recorded a significant improvement in mathematics (7 & 1/2 months), reading (8 months), and language arts (8 & 1/2 months). In addition to the students who completed the 2003 Y.O.U. Program, the four-year follow-up component includes students from Y.O.U. programs in 2000, 2001, and 2002 .
Ninety-eight percent (98%) of the 707 students who completed Y.O.U. in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 are currently in high school or have successfully completed high school graduation requirements.
